Mundelein’s food game is quietly stacked, and the proof is in the pig. You’ve got Smokin’ BBQ on 45 dishing out burnt ends that melt like butter next to Lamoon Thai’s green tea mochi, a cold, sweet curveball.

The range here runs from lake-view ribs at Gale Street Inn to a no-frills steak tostada at Taco & Burrito Express that’s pure chaos in the best way. Drive past the chains and turn where the locals do.

Your mouth will thank you.

Elly’s Brunch & Cafe is a morning ritual for me now. The staff makes you feel like family—they remember your order and your name. Food? Fresh, flavorful, and beautiful on the plate. Service is fast, but you never feel rushed. The owner clearly cares; you can see it in every detail. Consistent quality keeps me coming back week after week. Whether it’s eggs, pancakes, or a bowl of fruit, everything tastes homemade. If you’re in Mundelein, skip the chain breakfast spots. This is where it’s at.

Gale Street Inn is a classic, and for good reason. The ribs are legendary—fall-off-the-bone tender with a smoky glaze. Sitting by the lake while you eat? That’s a whole vibe. Service is spot-on, especially for special occasions; my anniversary dinner here felt effortless. The scallops were cooked perfectly, and the French onion soup is the best I’ve had in the area. It’s a bit pricier, but worth every penny. If you want a memorable meal with a view, this is the place.

Tighthead Brewing Company is a great hangout. The beer on tap is excellent—always something new to try. Staff is friendly and accommodating, even when it’s packed. You can bring your own food or grab something from a truck out front; either way, it works. They also have wine and Coke if beer isn’t your thing. Live music and events keep the energy high. It’s a relaxed spot to kick back with friends. I’ve spent many evenings here, and I’ll keep coming back.

Hitz Pub and Eatery is a solid local spot. The pizza is great, especially while watching a game—crispy crust, good cheese, no complaints. The steak salad is a sleeper hit, and the tenderloin is surprisingly good for a pub. Weekend brunch? Fantastic, and those Bloody Marys are strong. Service is usually spot-on, though I had one rough visit where the guy, Pat, seemed off his game. It happens. Overall, it’s a friendly place with good food. I’d still recommend it.

Kids Empire Mundelein is a lifesaver for parents. The place is clean and well-kept, which is rare for indoor play areas. Staff is friendly and helpful, always keeping an eye on things. The climbing structures are fun and safe, and there’s a dedicated toddler area that’s perfect for the little ones. My kids beg to come here. It’s a great way to burn off energy, especially on rainy days. If you’ve got young kids, this is a must-visit. I’m grateful it exists.

Holcomb Hollow Wholesale Bakery is a find. Best vegan and gluten-free bakery I’ve tried, hands down. The oatmeal cups are my absolute favorite—hearty, comforting, and not too sweet. Everything tastes fresh and high-quality, like they actually care about the ingredients. The staff is friendly, and the owner is welcoming, always happy to explain the options. You can also find their stuff at local cafes, which is convenient. Even if you’re not vegan, this place is worth a stop. I’m hooked.

Taco & Burrito Express is my go-to for a quick, tasty meal. The staff is friendly from the moment you walk in. I had the steak tostada and the brisket tostada—both were packed with flavor and crunch. Even during the lunch rush, I got a seat fast. Service is quick without feeling rushed, and the guacamole is delicious, freshly made. I’m already planning to go back to try more of the menu. It’s simple, good, and reliable. What more do you need?

El Barrio Restaurant surprised me in a good way. The mole enchiladas scored a perfect 10 in my book—rich, complex, and comforting. The shrimp dishes earn high marks too, cooked just right. Only downside? The skirt steak could use more flavor and a bit more seasoning. But the staff treats you like family, so you leave happy. It’s the best Mexican spot for travelers or locals who know better. I’ll definitely order the mole again. Just skip the steak next time.

Lamoon Thai is a quiet little gem. The flavors are fresh and authentic—I had the pad thai and it was perfectly balanced. Service is attentive without being pushy, and the place is spotless. The jalapeño bombs are legit: crispy, spicy, and addictive. Dessert? Green tea mochi, a nice cool finish. It’s a calm spot to eat, no chaos. If you’re in Mundelein and want Thai, skip the chains. This is where you go. I’m already planning my next visit.

Smokin BBQ on 45 lives up to the name. The ribs fall off the bone, and the burnt ends are smoky perfection. Honestly, the best BBQ in town. Even the sides impress—mac and cheese is creamy and rich, and they’ve got vegetarian options that don’t feel like an afterthought. The owner and staff are super friendly, making the whole experience warm and welcoming. I’ve been twice this month. If you love real smoked meat, this is your spot. No question.
